Secure patient messaging for Canadian primary care clinicians

Communicate securely with your patient without leaving your EMR.

When a message matters to your patient's care, you should not have to wait until your MOA has time to send it. Send it yourself in seconds, right from the encounter, or schedule it for later. Only the patient can read it, and it is saved to their chart.

The difference

Patient messages, without leaving the encounter.

Your EMR does not let you message a patient from the encounter, so even an important message waits in your MOA's queue. Medulla gives you the option to send it yourself, the moment you think of it.

The bolted-on way

  • Hand the message to your MOA and wait until they have the capacity to send it.
  • Health details go out in a plain email that sits in the patient's inbox for good.
  • Copy what you sent into the chart afterward, or leave a gap in the record.
  • Replies land in an inbox, away from the chart they belong in.

The Medulla way

  • Compose in the Medulla drawer on the encounter page, already addressed from the chart.
  • Only the patient can read the message, and it is encrypted throughout.
  • The message and any reply are filed to the patient's chart in your EMR as a note.
  • Send it now, or schedule it for the day it matters.

One click on the encounter page sends the message to the patient and the record to the chart.

How it works

Written on the encounter page, filed to the chart.

  1. 01

    Write it from the encounter

On the encounter page, switch to Messages. The message is already addressed to the patient from their chart. Type it and attach what they need, like a requisition or instructions.

  2. 02

    Send now, or schedule it

Most messages go out the moment you click Send now. When timing matters, pick a date instead: a blood work reminder set for a week before the follow-up goes out on its own.

  3. 03

    It lands in the chart

The patient receives it securely, and the message, plus their reply if you allowed one, is filed to their chart in your EMR as a note.

Secure Messaging

Secure for the patient, documented for you.

  • Addressed from the chart

The patient's details come from the chart you have open, so there is no lookup and no retyping.

  • Secure for the patient

Only the patient can read the message, and it is encrypted throughout.

  • Filed to the chart for you

Every message and reply is written to the patient's chart in your EMR as a note. Nothing to copy over.

  • Send now, or on the right day

Send it straight away, or schedule it for a date and time, like a blood work reminder a week before the follow-up.

  • One reply, when you want it

Allow a reply when you need an answer back, or keep the message one way, without opening an endless thread.

  • Private by default

Messages are encrypted, and Medulla is PIPEDA compliant, built and hosted in Canada.

Questions

Questions we hear a lot.

How does the patient receive the message?

Securely, using the contact details already on their chart. Only the patient can read it.

Does the message end up in my EMR?

Yes. Each message, and the patient's reply if you allowed one, is filed to the patient's chart in Med Access or your Oscar-based EMR as a note.

Can I send right away, or only schedule?

Both. Most messages go out the moment you click Send now. When timing matters, pick a date and time instead and Medulla sends it then.

Can patients reply?

Only when you allow it. You decide for each message whether the patient can reply, so a reminder can stay one way.

What can I attach?

Files such as a lab requisition or written instructions. You can also send the patient handout from the visit straight from the scribe.

Do I have to leave the encounter page?

No. Messages is a tab in the Medulla drawer, beside Scribe and Ask. You write, attach, and send without opening another app or tab.

Is messaging secure?

Yes. Messages are encrypted, only the patient can read them, and Medulla is PIPEDA compliant, built and hosted in Canada. Read our privacy notice.
